Touch Solar

Timex Intelligent Quartz Depth Gauge Dive Watch

Timex-Intelligent-Quartz-Depth-Gauge-Div

Best Dive Watch for the Data-Driven Diver: The relationship between time and depth for a diver is critical. Stay deep for too long and you risk getting the bends. Yet there are only a handful of dive watches that incorporate a depth gauge; those tend to cost about the same as a week of diving in Cozumel. But the Timex Intelligent Quartz Depth Gauge adds not only a depth gauge (functional to a respectable 60 meters) but also a temperature sensor to a rugged and capable dive watch, all for the price of a decent wetsuit.

Victorinox Swiss Army DiveMaster 500

Victorinox-Swiss-Army-DiveMaster-500-bes

Best Dive Watch for the Value-Minded Diver: Since it was introduced, the Dive Master 500 has quietly become a favorite of dive watch enthusiasts and one of the best values around. The gunmetal steel case, engraved luminous bezel, legible dial and long, supple rubber strap have a fit and finish on par with divers two or three times more expensive. The Dive Master is available with either a self-winding, high grade mechanical movement or a precise quartz ticker (both Swiss, naturally) and a variety of dial and strap colors to match with your summer wardrobe, neoprene or otherwise.

Oris ProDiver Date

Oris-ProDiver-Date-best-dive-watch-gear-

Best For the Next-Level Diver: Oris has long been known for its distinctive, rugged dive watches, but the ProDiver Date, as its name suggests, is a cut above the amateurs. The lightweight, tough, corrosion-resistant titanium case is topped with an innovative rotating bezel that features Oris’s Rotation Safety System. This requires the user to pull up on an outer ring before turning it, locking the bezel in place; this prevents accidental rotation, which could alter dive times. The bezel is topped with an engraved and luminous ceramic timing ring that is impervious to scratching. A distinct Oris wave-patterned dial tops it all off. This diver means business.

Tudor Pelagos

Tudor-Pelagos-best-dive-watch-gear-patro

Best Dive Watch for the Nostalgic Diver: Unless you’ve been on submarine maneuvers for the past few weeks, you know the big news that Tudor is coming back to the United States. Rolex’s affordable subsidiary will be sold on our shores for the first time since the 1990s, and dive watch lovers are rejoicing. Following in the footsteps (fin kicks?) of its military-issued Submariner forebear, the Pelagos may be one of the most beautifully engineered divers you can buy, replete with a satin-finished titanium case, a ceramic bezel and classic Tudor design cues. It’s available with a rubber strap, but that’s not how you’ll want to wear it: the coolest feature of the Pelagos is the spring-loaded expanding clasp on the bracelet, which automatically adjusts to the compression of a wetsuit sleeve underwater. Lines are already forming at Tudor dealers.

Bremont Supermarine 2000

Bremont-Supermarine-2000-best-dive-watch

Best For the Deep Diver: It may seem ominous that a 2,000-meter water resistant dive watch is named for an airplane, but not when you consider the company that made it. Bremont, the British darling of the watch world these days, has its roots — and its inspirations — in the aviation world. So when they set out to build a dive watch, rather than name it for a sea creature or submarine, they paid homage to a famous seaplane, the Supermarine S.6B (the first plane to exceed 400 miles per hour, by the way). While Bremont’s first dive watch, the Supermarine 500, was perfectly adequate with its shock- and magnetism-resistant 500-meter case, it wasn’t good enough for the company. This latest iteration can descend to a crushing 2,000 meters. You won’t survive that drop into the abyss, but your Bremont, with its chronometer-certified movement, will still keep impeccable time.

OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph

OMEGA-Seamaster-Planet-Ocean-Chronograph

Best for the Uncompromising Diver: OMEGA’s deep diver bristles with more technology than a nuclear submarine. A co-axial column wheel chronograph movement with a temperature- and magnetism-resistant silicon hairspring (visible through the transparent caseback) powers the Seamaster Planet Ocean, and on the business end of things, the dial features an intuitive elapsed time counter that reads like a standard clock face. A scratch-resistant Liquid Metal bezel, helium escape valve, and 600 meters of water resistance mean this may be the most over-engineered dive watch you can buy.

Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk

Girard-Perregaux-Sea-Hawk-best-dive-watc

Best for the Discerning Diver: Combine high watchmaking with deep diving and you get the new Sea Hawk. Long a cult favorite, the latest version sports a more modern design while retaining enough DNA from its ancestors to keep devotees of the storied brand happy. There are familiar cues — like the power reserve meter on the dial, a date window at 1:30 and the small seconds display — but the case is rich in contemporary beveled angles, and the ratcheting bezel is inlaid with vulcanized rubber. What makes the Sea Hawk really special, though, is what lurks beneath the sea-monster-engraved caseback: a self-winding mechanical movement entirely designed and built by one of the world’s purveyors of haute horlogerie. It almost seems a shame to get it wet. But go right ahead; the Sea Hawk has a depth rating of 1,000 meters.

Gear Patrol shows you seven great watches, all under $1,000 — many well under.

Hexa K500 Diver

Hexa-K500-Diver-Gear-Patrol-650.jpg

Movement: Seiko Automatic SII NE15/6R15
Lume: LÜM-TEC
Depth: 500 meters
Best dive watch for the design conscious: If you’re the kind of guy who’s taken by stealth fighters and Lambos, this is your timepiece. We see a lot of derivative watch case designs out there, but the Hexa K500 isn’t one of them. The angular case has a unique look that offsets the crown from the typical 3 or 9 to the 10 o’clock position so it doesn’t rest on the wrist, and the crown protector is creatively incorporated as part of the case edge. Though it looks like it might impart a degree of discomfort, the toothy 44mm case is comfortable — especially paired with the fine Italian natural rubber dive strap. We bet you start at least a few conversations your next time out with the K500. Tell them it’s a skunkworks project.

Seiko SKX781

Seiko-SKX781-Gear-Patrol-650.jpg

Movement: Seiko Automatic 7S26
Lume: Seiko
Depth: 200 meters
Best dive watch for the recreational diver: The SKX781 (aka, the “Orange Monster”) is highly heralded in “what’s affordable” dive watch forums. That’s because of a solid 316L stainless steel case and bracelet, a hardlex (mineral) crystal, unidirectional bezel and 660-foot depth rating all come in at just under $200. The 42mm diameter isn’t overwhelming, though the bright orange dial is pretty noticeable; the famously bright Seiko lume on the hands and markers is similarly impressive. Its unidirectional bezel is easy to grip but could use a bit more firmness and tightening. Still, what you get is a good dive watch at a great price.

Marathon Jumbo Search and Rescue (JSAR)

Marathon-JSAR-Gear-Patrol-650.jpg

Movement: Swiss high-torque ETA quartz
Lume: C3 Superluminova
Depth: 300 meters
Best dive watch for the meaty wristed: Marathon watches have a cult following in both niche watch circles and the military. Those are the sorts of people you want to follow. These watches are well-made, no-nonsense and tough as nails; the JSAR is their big one. With a 46.6mm diameter, 17mm thickness and a weight of nearly one-third of a pound, it’s no shrinking violet. The Superluminova on the bezel, markers and hands makes it easy to read, and the chunky bezel ratchets with confidence. Plus, it comes with a natural rubber strap, which is far more comfortable and resilient than the fake stuff.

Citizen Eco-Drive Professional Diver (Ecozilla)

Citizen-Eco-Drive-Professional-Diver-Gea

Movement: Citizen Eco-Drive solar quartz
Lume: Citizen
Depth: 300 meters
Best dive watch for the daring diver: Seemingly inspired by a vintage diving helmet, the robust Eco-Drive Professional Diver has a beastly 48mm stainless steel case that looks unlike any dive watch out there. The Caliber B873 Japanese-quartz movement is powered by both sunlight and indoor light, with an amazing 180-day power reserve and 3-day low charge warning. It has a mineral crystal, a unidirectional bezel, great lume, screw-down crown and 300 meter water resistance. Its urethane rubber strap even has a diving extender, so you know it means more than just above-water business (if the unbelievable mass didn’t give it away).

Anstead Oceanis

Anstead-Oceanis-Gear-Patrol-650.jpg

Movement: Seiko NH36a Automatic
Lume: Superluminova
Depth: 500 meters
Best dive watch for the patriot: Navy man Tom Anstead designed and built this diver to be affordable and durable — but it also happens to be a handsome timepiece. A reliable, accurate Seiko NH36a automatic movement powers the Oceanis. The matte black dial contrasts well with the meaty silver 120-click bezel, and the brown leather band adds an air of sporty sophistication. All this for less than $400 might have you thinking it’s a show piece. It’s not. The Oceanis is water resistant is to 300 meters, and it has a 40+ hour power reserve. Best of all? It’s made right here in America.

Halios Laguna

Halios-Laguna-Gear-Patrol-650.jpg

Movement: Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic
Lume: C3 Superluminova
Depth: 500 meters
Best dive watch for the retro lover: Jason Lim got his cult following started with the fantastic Halios BlueRing, which sold out virtually overnight. His latest creation, the Laguna, is evocative of beautiful classics like the Longines Legend Diver or the Bulova Accutron Deep Sea 666 with its twin crowns and inner bezel ring. It has a sophisticated yet simple look that works well whether you’re dressed up, dressed down or suited up for the depths. We especially like the sword minute and hour hands. An Isofrane 1968 natural rubber strap is high-end touch that true divers — or any buyer, really — will appreciate.

Casio Frogman G-Shock GWF-1000

Casio-Frogman-G-Shock-GWF-1000-Gear-Patr

Movement: Digital
Lume: LED Backlit
Depth: 200 meters
Best dive watch for the digital diver: Digital isn’t nerdy when it comes to this bad boy. The Frogman emerged from the minds at Casio in 1993, and it stands as the only Casio watch that’s ISO 6425 compliant and has a 200-meter dive rating. Its unique asymmetric shape is offset from the strap, giving it an odd, unconventional look that’s stuck through five Frogman generations. The GWF-1000 (Japanese version) also boasts time updates from six global locations, shock resistance, dive time measurement, solar power, tide and moon graph functions and a robust diamond-like carbon coating over a stainless steel case. If you see a guy wearing this, he’s either a serious diver, a really tough bastard, or both.
